CMI Code of Professional Conduct and Practic

The CMI Code of Professional Conduct and Practice is a real differentiator. It sets the CMI and its members apart. It is what we stand for, as professional managers buying into and personifying the CMI vision. The Code refers to competence, professionalism, honesty and integrity and the duty to keep up to date with current good practice.

Further themes addressed in the Code include transparency in communications, the safeguard of confidential information, respect for the environment and for issues of faith, conscience and diversity.

The Code is binding on all members. As such, it forms a critical ingredient of our value proposition. It also sends a clear message to organisations that, by employing CMI members or, in fact, applying the Code within the organisation itself, they gain immediate added value.

The Code was mostly recently reviewed and revised in April 2007.  It will be reviewed again in the second half of 2010.  This work is overseen by the Professional Standards Committee. PSC has a remit, not only to keep the Code refreshed but also to promote the messages within the Code, both internally with the CMI and its membership, and also to the wider world.

The members of the Professional Standards Committee are:

  • Robin Colby FCMI (Chairman)
  • Andrew Ades MIBC CMC FCMI
  • Keith Dabbs FCMI
  • Dr Alexandra di Stefano FCMI
  • Simon Keel-Diffey FCMI
  • Crawford Robinson FCMI
  • James Short FCMI
  • Barrie Sinclair-Kemp MIBC CMC FCMI
  • Katy Turff CMgr MCMI
  • David Whyte CMgr MCMI (Chairman of the Investigation Panel)
The PSC is supported by its Investigation Panel; members who are called upon – in accordance with our
complaints handling and resolution process – to investigate a formal complaint that may be made against an individual member. Members are appointed to the Panel on the basis of their experience in investigating complaints, sitting on disciplinary panels, analysing evidence and/or acting as conciliators.

CMI membership may be taken away if a complaint, once investigated, shows an actual breach of the Code. For anonymous case studies on recent disciplinary investigations, click here.

The PSC has developed an active programme of work for 2010 which includes:

  • A review of the complaints handling and resolution process
  • A review of the Code of Professional Conduct and Practice
  • Input to the debate on Leadership, through the new Leadership Standard and Index
